Gravatars are go

Monday November 8, 2004

I was checking out Jina Boltons' redesign and noticed the funky little icons next to comments, above that a link to Gravatar so I popped along to have a look. What a cool idea!

There is no plug-in for textpattern as far as I can tell but there is a hack and it is a real simple hack too. So there we have it. Well for now anyway, I am not sure how I feel about them yet.

I was wondering to myself why Gravatar had decided to put a big old icon with the word "Test" as the default if you didn't have your own icon uploaded, then I remembered that a long while back I had uploaded a test icon and forgotten all about it, Doh!

So help me slow down these pages and sign up for a Gravatar and personalise your comments! ;)

I’m trying to find a way to implement it myself. I’m fond of it…

But hey, every aesthetic improvement is worth slowing down the page ;)

    Cool!
I just signed up for it now!

They’re just small pics, so it shouldn’t slow things down too much.

Once again me, can you show me the code how to place just the excerpt of the text on your start page?

    Hey John,
Sites looking great here… those Gravatars will fairly set it off now :) hehe

Haa Haa, Gordon I just realised you have got Gravatar on your site. I didn’t realise… I thought it was some mad thing you had done yourself :)

Very cool! I like the idea of gravatars. Usually on the better sites, the owner has a specific color comment or it’s formatted different from the other comments. This beats that by a mile. Each comment can be customized! Awesome!

How long does it take for a gravatar to be rated?

Nice. I was an early adopter of the Gravatar service, seeing it as an alternative to comment highlighting, and haven’t looked back.

Josh, you have a great looking site. I never complain about whitespace being put to good use. ;)

John, I meant to refer to you as “John” and not Josh. Sorry about that. :)

Hey Ray, not sure how long a Gravatar takes to be rated but I really ought to get mine sorted!

Hey Kartooner, no problems about the name, it happens all the time, it’s my son’s name so it’s in the family! ;)

Looks fantabulous. I love the Gravatar system in that it helps you spot commenters right off the bat, just like in a forum.

    Change that darn “test” icon!!!

Dennis The Menace … the blond one, well the one I know.
My dad really named me after this character, but spelled Denis! :)

Hmm my gravatar hasn’t been approved yet.
Are leaves for mature audiences ?

I’m impressed by the number of your commentors that have signed up for Gravatars. I’m having a hard time convincing my readers. I think Blogger support would help pull a lot of people along…

Beautiful site you have here, you’ve inspired me.
