For those of us NOT at SXSW

Wednesday March 16, 2005

Well, here I am at 6.30am banging out a blog post for the day before going off to a meeting I don't want to go to, a meeting that I am 99% certain is going to frustrate the hell out of me, but hey, it could be worse, I could be going with an open mind, worse still I could be at SXSW.

I mean think about it, I would probably be hanging out with stalking Hicks and Malarkey, which means I would have probably met the the big Z (no not Zorro!) at some point. Imagine how disappointing that would be, we wouldn't be able to share a good ole 'mates' fag, he gave up smoking and what an utter disappointment it would be to find he doesn't, after all, float two inches above the surface of the Earth, doesn't always wear that hat and for some reason doesn't think I am the most interesting person on the planet.

I may well have met Dave Shea and for that I am thankful that I am sat here writing this and not in some Texas motel right now, dying of embarrassment after having made a complete arse of myself gushing with profound thanks for what he has done for me, to have him look down on me like some sad little teenage groupy (with an oddly hairy upper lip), whilst I am asking if he would mind signing my copy of the book.

The absolute horror of SXSW doesn't even bear thinking about really, all those dull seminars about web standards to sit through (I mean really, do I look like I care where you should stick the level one heading?). All those PowerBooks, worse still than the fact I only own an iBook, the fact that Jeremy's iBook is so much more shiny than mine could ever be, yes I am glad I am here and not there.

So if you, like me, are sat, about to start trying to put off another day of work, trawling the blog-o-sphere in search of more news of SXSW, using the excuse that it is vital information that will further your career, no of course it's not just another exscuse not to do any real work. If today is the day all those jobs you have been putting off for months simply must be done, take solace in the fact that you aren't stuck at SXSW, I am sure they are all having a shitty time and can't wait to get home.

And if you are sat at SXSW reading this... go away, I hate you... and so do all the other people reading this who aren't at SXSW... so there... sucker!

Yeah, I’m happy I’m not there, but for other reason. I heard (and sawy) that there is a nice shiny Apple Store in there and I am pretty sure that I wouldn’t be able to hold myself from buying, umm, powerbook there… :) So at least I get to save my money for few more days, now let’s hope they don’t plan to open an Apple Store here in Vancouver.

I’m with you, Oxton. I’ve gone off Bloglines this week. It’s a SXSW overload, and for those of us too damn busy to be there, it’s starting to hurt.

Nothing against those writing about their experiences in Texas – I’d write about it if I were there, and one must use one’s own blog as one sees fit – but STOP RUBBING IT IN YOU GUYS! I’m working 20 hour days back here!

Still, thanks for holding the Brit-end up.

    Yup.

    Same here.

That IRC chat for the Bloggies announcement was hell! (Ohh I’m sitting in the third row – leia).

    Pah!

You are not the only one pining for SXSW right now. I had to choose Game Dev Conference or SXSW, and due to proximity to San Jose, the GDC won out.
