So, what's a nice geek like you doing at a blog like this?

Thursday January 6, 2005

Part of the plan for the re-design is to get the Elsewhere section into better shape and that will include blogs that I read.

I think I do actually read most of the blogs of the people who comment here regularly but still, this is my plan/request, if you are a regular or irregular reader of this site, tell me about yourself.

I guess what I am looking for is your blog/web address, the country you come from and what the main focus of your blog is. For example, I might write:

John Oxton, 32 year old CSS designer (whatever the hell one of those is!) based in the Cotswolds (United Kingdom). My blog is mostly bullshit with the occasional design note.

  1. Craig

    1322 days ago

Craig Erskine, 30 year old web developer based in Green Bay, WI (USA). My site is slowly turning into a web design business site. Soon I hope to add my personal blog to qrayg.com

    Anyways…

Ian Main, 22, web designer of…web…designs. Located in Canberra, Australia. Enjoys watching people enjoy long walks along the beach.
  3. Darren

  6. Rob Mientjes

    1322 days ago

Okay, so you know me and all, but let’s do this! :P

The name’s Rob Mientjes, I’m a whopping 16 years old. I’m a young web developer and graphics designer from the Netherlands, and my blog, located at zooibaai.nl, is stacked with nonsense and the odd design-related post.
  7. Switch

    1322 days ago

Bond, 16 years old and from the Netherlands. Have no profession, dreams or interesting hobbys, I’m just boring and that of the main reasons I never post comments to the blogs I read. Don’t ask me why I started a weblog, I can’t design and have no topic to talk about.

Anyway, have fun, you website looks good but the redesign would obviously look better.

Oh, my blog is about nothing and was just a stupid experiment. The language is Dutch so you won’t be able to read it, hah!
  8. JD

    1322 days ago

JD Huntington, 21, web designer for a small design shop and a fulltime computer science student to boot.

http://fishbulb.info is where I do most of my stuff, but I’ve been focusing on getting a nifty TXP design in place, so the place has been a bit stagnant lately.

Love the site, especially your “live build of textpattern” series. Keep up the good work.
  9. teli

    1322 days ago

Ma Blog: Rants, raves, BS, and other things – every once in a while I post on what bit of geek knowledge I have or come across.

Can’t wait to see how your design transformation turns out :D
  10. Andrew Hume

    1322 days ago

    Hi John,

    Andrew Hume/25/London/UK/

Musician and (tentatively) web developer. Sometimes people give me money to build sites: it’s all terribly exciting.

My blog (brand new, thanks for the link yesterday, brand new matching gravatar to come): CSS, typography, the usual suspects… no doubt with some healthy cow poo thrown in.

I also founded and wrote UsableType
  11. Shawn Grimes

I am 6’3”, dark and people say I look a little like a younger George Clooney.

In my spare time I like wind-surfing, playing pro-basketball and playing my genuine Jimi Hendrix Fender Stratocaster.

Anything else you would like to know?
  13. Jeff Croft

    I’m a new subscriber.

  17. David

    1322 days ago

I’m David Hay, a UK (Sussex) student with a sideline in web design that’s just getting off the ground.

I post religiously to my blog every day, thus explaining why some posts are the odd gem in between ramblings rather than the other way around. Blog is about anything, pretty much, although I do prefer to talk about technology than myself.
  18. Anton

    1322 days ago

Anton here. Doing the 3rd-person thing:
A mid-thirties creative professional who works under the radar as a rich-media developer for a very large insurance company. Anton resides in central Illinois (around a lot of corn) where he raises his two beautiful children (one of whom is disabled).
He draws, he writes, he plays guitar, he enjoys gaming, is not afraid of doing laundry, dishes, or the kitchen, and he also becomes bored easily with things that do not challenge him.

    Booya.

Maybe I should work on my site a bit. Shall we race to the finish?

  25. Pete

    1322 days ago

    Peter Costello
A 29 year old Web designer based in Sydney Australia. Relocating to UK in 2 months and starting to freakout.

domestik.net , my personal site is constantly being re-worked live, subject is primarily design although I’m currently trying to run my portfolio through movable type so all the more recent entries are folio work.

Sometimes, when I’m not working I like to eat butter.

  32. Peter J.Lambert

    1322 days ago

    Peter J.Lambert, thankyou very much.

    I’m a web designer/developer in York, UK.

My blog (http://pixelicious.co.uk) is mostly just an irregular brain dump of what’s going on in my life. I don’t talk about work much.

It’s in the middle of a change to Textpattern (from Wordpress) including a redesign, so let me know if you find anything majorly wrong.
  33. Martin

    1322 days ago

Martin Smith, I live in East Yorkshire UK.
By day I am a repressed HTML monkey and by night I stroke my XHTML/CSS creations and long for better days.
I have no idea where the hell Martagnan is going but I really should spend more time with it.
One day I hope to move back to that beautiful province that is Manchester.

My blog is kind of a mish-mash of stuff, thoughts, musings, stuff that catches my interest, links to technical stuff etc. I just started it last April as a way to boost my creative process during some downtime. FWIW it’s at http://webteam.unb.ca/isil/elink/

Patrick Bennett, 29, New York, NY. Basically, a multi-discipline visual artist who lately finds himself doing an enormous amount of front end and conceptual online work for R/GA. My site (PB Graphic Design, NY) is more of a business destination than a blog.

Tom Werner, 25, Print and web design. I live in Oceanside, California (north of San Diego about 30 miles) and work for myself. I haven’t written a blog entry on mojombo.com for about a million years, and by now probably 80% of the comments are from enthusiastic male enhancement product users (damn you MT 2.6 for making it so hard to delete comments!).

Also, I invented Gravatars and WAC-FR (the partial inspiration for SIFR). I like mountain biking, snowboarding, and rock climbing. Also, eating pizza is nice.
  46. Adam Bardsley

    1321 days ago

I’m 25, a Web and IT administrator for a student union in Lancaster, UK (but that doesn’t make me a student!)

My blog is about life, tech and philosophy, although it’s a bit new right now and kind of more a learning experience around textpattern and new CSS techniques. I think I’m going to review my toys when I buy them as well.

Looks like you have a very long reading list now John ;)

  50. Joshua Lopez

    1320 days ago

31, Director of Willed Body Program for the University of Arizona, College of Medicine. My little blog is generally filled with complaints, questions, gripes about CSS/(x)html/standards, but mostly nonsense. Sometimes I fail to update it as regularly as I’d like to, but sometimes I just don’t have anything to say either.
  51. Ray

    1320 days ago

I’m Ray Williams, a 25 year-old government contractor / husband / father / CSS design hack. I live in Warner Robins, Georgia (about an hour and fifteen minutes south of Atlanta for those non-Americans who remember the 1996 Olympics). Mine and my wife’s website is mainly kept up to date by me, so you’ll find topics ranging from my daughter, to work, to thoughts on design, to completely random…

This is a great idea, John.
  52. Kris Khaira

    1320 days ago

Hi Josh, hope you remember me. I witnessed your site go live from a default textpattern installation to what it is now by hitting refresh. Thrilling.

Anyway – Kris Khaira, 20, Malaysia, freelance web designer. I live on an island called Penang, which was also hit by the tsunami. I usually blog about my observations of life and on web design, web standards, software and macs.

  55. Keith Bell

    1320 days ago

Keith Bell, from Edinburgh, Scotland. Sometime consulting engineer, sometime independent web designer, frequent Grumpy Old Man (and here to prove that not everyone who builds web sites is under 40…)

Strive to produce accessible, standards-compliant sites (aided by a pedantic nature).

Personal site an aging joke, having been on long hiatus during my “exile” in Sweden, and my search for The Perfect Content Management System (conclusion: there ain’t no such animal). But like Fu Manchu, “The world shall hear from me again”.
  56. Tom

    1320 days ago

Hi, my name’s Tom and I’m a 17 year old student from London. Currently in my last year in Sixth Form and hopefully off to Cambridge next year to read maths.

I have only recently got into the blogging stuff on the internet and have only dabbled in web standards, but in time I will have my own blog. It will almost certainly be full of drunken stories and moaning about exams.
  57. Elvis

    1320 days ago

Hi, my name is Elvis. I used to be a really famous musician but got fed up and faked my own death. I am now living in Essex and I spend most of my time tinkering around with PC’s etc. I like your site, I like it a lot!
  58. Narayan

    1319 days ago

My name is Narayan. I’m from Chicago and live in California. My site lacks any particular focus; depending on who you ask it’s considered a political, literature, cultural, photography, or food site. I suppose the same ambiguity applies to a description of what I do for a living.
  59. Ryan Mack

    1319 days ago

Ryan Mack, 29. During the day I perform software quality assurance testing for a US tax preparation firm. In the evening, when the mood strikes me, I work on improving my blog. I don’t get to drop by as often as I’d like these days (it’s the busy season for those of us in the US tax business), but I still manage to swing by from time to time. You’ve got a fantastic blog. Always a joy to read.
  60. Chris McLeod

    1319 days ago

Chris McLeod here, 21 year-old web administrator for a multi-national oil & gas consultancy and based in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Primarily a code monkey and with a leaning towards standards compliant XHTML & CSS, I spend a lot of time fiddling with my site “behind the scenes” – when I should spend more time keeping the content up to date!

Speaking of the content, my site is an eclectic mix of personal observations, code discussion and talk about switching to a Mac on day…

When not performing not-so-amazing feats of code-fu, I spend my time running around after my 1 year-old son, Euan, trying to stop him from destroying everything in reach.
  61. Lori

I’m Lori, 38 yr. old web designer/php tweaker in oakland, ca, us. My blog is about random web and mac stuff, living with asperger’s syndrome, and other random things of interest to me. There are underactive forums, custom hangman games, and flash games to play too.
